Leading scientists in the United States of America have visited Nigeria to investigate how a top Nigerian politician survived a severe attack of the typically deadly brain-eating amoeba, naegleria fowleri. The unnamed politician defied all odds and pulled through the debilitating ailment to the surprise of medical experts worldwide.
Naegleria fowleri, known as ‘brain-eating amoeba’ is a free living, bacteria-feeding amoeba that makes its way into a host through their nasal cavity and into their brain where the amoeba uses the brain as food source until the host eventually dies from a slow, painful death.
“We count this patient (unnamed politician) as one of the lucky ones”, said a brain surgeon Dr. Brown, who is part of the team of visiting scientist. “The fatality rate for anyone attacked by the brain-eating amoeba is 99%. Normally, people just don’t survive. But our preliminary findings suggests that the intracranial cavity of this patient was at its minimal capacity for a human to exist and, fortunately for him, it wasn’t enough for the amoebas to survive”, Dr. Brown told YeyeNews.com.
Another member of the team Prof. Rudd Charlton stressed that the effect of the amoeba is unique to individuals. “Not everyone has the same size or operable brain. So the effects of the brain-eating amoeba depends on that one factor. We have noticed from the tests done so far that the smaller and more incompetent your brain is the better chance of survival you will have”, the Professor explained.
YeyeNews.com gathered from medical experts within the country that there have been many unreported cases of senior political figures and celebrities who had been fortunate survivors of the brain-eating amoeba. “This affliction has been around the circle of politicians for a while. Indeed many of them had been lucky survivors. The key to surviving the ailment is that the amoeba can’t survive without the brain material to feed on. I think that says a lot about many of the people occupying political positions in this country”.
