Veteran Nollywood actor Chiwetalu Agu, who was arrested by the army in Anambra State yesterday for wearing a pro-Biafra outfit has been released after he agreed to forfeit 100 loaves of freshly baked bread in his possession.
The Chairman of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Anambra State Chapter, who brokered the deal, told YeyeNews.com reporter that the commander of the Operation Golden Dawn in Onitsha personally stood for the Nigerian Army. Agu had wanted to go back to Upper Iweka to continue with sharing the bread but, according to the chairman, the “commander said they want the situation to be a win-win for everybody. So they are going to release him if he agrees to forfeit the remainder of the loaves of bread he was sharing before his arrest. We surrendered the Biafran bread to the Nigerian Army.”
When YeyeNews.com asked the chairman if the army dumped the bread into river Nigeria, he shook his head forcefully and said that “They started sharing the loaves to officers in our presence. I was shocked that they want to eat the bread even though the labels contain the same Biafra insignia that is on Chiwetalu Agu’s dress.”
A trader who was present during the arrest told YeyeNews.com that the soldiers were attracted to the Upper Iweka area by the strong aroma of the bread that the actor was sharing. “Chiwetalu Agu was just peacefully sharing bread when the army people came. We suspect that the pleasant smell of the freshly baked bread must have attracted the soldiers to him. They first went to the bus containing the bread but when they saw the actor wearing a Biafra flag they started harassing him. They dragged him into their truck and took the remaining bread along with them. We begged them to leave the bread so we can continue sharing to those in need but they refused. Now we understand why they took them. The soldiers looked hungry, yawning.”
YeyeNews.com reporter could not contact the commander of the operation Golden Dawn as he was said to be on a mission in another part of the town. However, an officer who did not want to be identified told YeyeNews.com that they could not resist the bread. “These Biafra people are very good in baking bread. We didn’t even look at the Biafra symbol on the labels of the bread. They were delicious. Please tell Chiwetalu Agu to remember us next time he wants to share bread. Many of us are his fans. And we have not received salary in three months.”
