The Taliban government of Afghanistan has vowed to make everything possible for Afghan citizens to mover to US and EU if the sanctions imposed on the country are not lifted soon enough. The Taliban leadership made this known to the US and EU in an open letter addressed to Washington and Brussels respectively.
“The Taliban informed Washington and Brussels that it has the capacity to destabilize their countries by releasing its entire population into them”, the source said. “The US and EU may think they are safe because they don’t share borders with Afghanistan but they will be shocked how quickly the large population of Afghan economic refugees would besiege their borders once the Taliban blows the whistle. Afghanistan is not like Iran that has chosen to bear their suffering under heavy sanctions with equanimity”.
A Middle East security expert confirmed the seriousness of the Taliban’s threat to YeyeNews.com reporter. “Since the Taliban overthrew the US-backed government in Kabul, they have been struggling to provide basic functions because all of the countries assets, including their foreign reserve, have been frozen. They can’t even pay salaries of essential workers right now. They have therefore taken a tough stance that if they cannot meet the basic needs of the people as a result of the sanctions then they will not hesitate to release the entire population into the EU and US. The plan is to destabilize those countries with their hungry and angry population”.
YeyeNews.com gathered that the US and EU are already making frantic efforts to reach out to Moscow and Beijing to help persuade the Taliban not to carry out their threat. “The EU is putting pressure on the US to lift the sanctions because they would be the first victims if the Taliban decide to carry out their threat”, a top EU official told YeyeNews.com. “We have agreed to meet with the Russians and Chinese to help in the talks with the Taliban. We must start a serious negotiation with them immediately before it gets out of hand. If we don’t we will be the ultimate losers. We can’t afford to have twenty million hungry people at our borders”.
On how Taliban could achieve this, a professor of International Relations at University of Abuja said one clear way would be for Taliban to persecute its citizens by making life miserable for them and make them fear for the lives. “This way they will qualify for asylum according to the UN Charter. Another way is to deepen the economic hardship such that Afghans would qualify as economic refugees”, he explained further to YeyeNews.com.
