A study published in the Journal of Psychology in the University of Jos has found that the reason that Nigerians are the happiest people in the world is because of the high rate of consumption of pornographic contents in the country. The lead author of the study disclosed that on average 120 million Nigerians visit pornographic websites daily.
“Those figures are the highest in the world. Even India with over a billion population does not generate such huge traffic”, the leader author Prof. Zacheaus Cheng told YeyeNews.com. According to the abstract of the paper, the “study maps the traffic from Nigeria into three major pornographic websites through their IP addresses”. The researchers further traced these addresses to particular devices at specific locations. “It was a very challenging work but the findings are very interesting”, the lead author declared.
Another researcher who took part in the research Samson Akpan gave a detailed breakdown of the demographic spread of the mapped out IP addresses. “Most of these addresses are registered within our universities and other public facilities. Can you believe people use WiFi services within religious facilities to access these websites too? Also some of the IP addresses were traced to hospitals, prisons and even to the sit of power of the Federation and some State Government Houses.”, he said. “But the majority were definitely scattered within the population. Though we cannot say why there is so much interest in pornographic contents in Nigeria. That is an answer that a new study will provide. However other studies have proven that people who watch pornography are likely to be happier and feel more relaxed than those who don’t. So this can explain why Nigerians are among the happiest people in the world”.
A source in the Ministry of Information and Culture told YeyeNews.com reporter that the government has been aware of the findings of the study and that they are even working on ways to generate revenue from the heavy traffic through a process he described as the monetization of the ‘porn culture’in Nigeria. “We are specifically working on the introduction a ‘porn tax’ to extract a percentage of the cost of data used in accessing the websites daily. “The government will generate a lot of money from this initiative. 120 million visits a day! That is a minefield waiting to be exploited. The government doesn’t have to build any infrastructure to support this. We just need to make the appropriate laws mandating the Internet Service Providers to remit an agreed percentage to the government coffers”.
