There was palpable anxiety in the highbrow Maitama area of the FCT on Wednesday following a reported sighting of Nigeria’s infamous ‘man eater’ Clifford Orji entering a gated mansion in a flashy car with a van of police escort in tow. A source in Maitama told YeyeNews.com that everyone has been apprehensive since the news broke out.
“We have even reported to the Maitama police station but they don’t seem to be interested in the information. The police told us that they can’t go and conduct search in an apartment of that caliber over an information that is obviously not credible. They insist the man has died since 2012. But you know this is Nigeria. Clifford Orji never died. Everything was carefully choreographed. I am now very sure of that because I saw him come down from the car and walked into that building. Nobody in this neighborhood knows the occupants of that place. It is very suspicious”, the source narrated.
Recall that Clifford Orji was arrested in Lagos in 1999 with human parts at his shanty in the Toyota bus stop area along Oshodi Isolo expressway. He was later declared dead on August 17, 2012 while awaiting trial at the Kirikiri maximum security prison. The circumstances surrounding his reported death is still shrouded in mystery. A source who was an official of the prison at the time of Orji’s alleged death told a YeyeNews.com reporter that she did not believe the story behind the inmate’s death. “Everything was shrouded in mystery. It is possible he was smuggled out at night and replaced with a dead person in the cell”.
The incident in Maitama is the latest in a string of reported sightings since Clifford Orji’s alleged death. And sources in Maitami have revealed that plans are underway to break into the property if the police do not respond to their distress call soon. But a police officer in the Maitama Division who don’t want his name in print told YeyeNews.com that the Force is careful to not to have a repeat of the controversial raid of Justice Odili’s residence.
“This is not a good time to be undertaking raids over obviously flawed intelligence especially in this Maitama. Remember what happened at the house of that Supreme Court Justice, right? We don’t want a repeat of that. Clifford Orji is long dead. Perhaps, they only saw a lookalike. We can’t go into that house. It’s a private property and we respect the rights of the occupants to their privacy”, the police officer said.
