President Muhammadu Buhari has referred to Black Friday as a day to remember black freedom fighters. The president made the remark while responding to a question on whether Nigeria would set aside a day to remember her independence heroes during a live interview in NTA on Monday. “Nigeria already has so many public holidays. We will not introduce a new one to celebrate our independence heroes. We are going to adopt the Black Friday put in place by the UN to celebrate black heroes and freedom fighters as our own day to celebrate our independence heroes. This will make the UN to recognize the sacrifices of our independence heroes”, the president said in the interview.
As the president was speaking, his Senior Special Assistant on Media was seen frantically gesticulating to the cameraman to end the broadcast. “Garba Shehu’s job is tough right now. How long can one cover up such lack of coherence by his principal. Especially when that principal is the number one citizen. Now he had to end a live broadcast to save the nation the embarrassment”, a source who monitored the interview said.
However, an official in the presidency has expressed dismay that Garba Shehu will allow the president to answer random questions in a live TV program knowing his shortcomings. “Sometimes I feel Garba Shehu has a deal with his former boss Atiku Abubakar to tarnish APC as 2023 approaches. He is aware that the president’s capacity to comprehend and arrange his thoughts has reduced significantly but still surreptitiously placed him in front of a live camera to embarrass the nation. That is what we have been avoiding by prerecording all the president’s speeches and TV interviews. So why did they allow a live interview this time? I think someone just wanted to embarrass the president and his administration”, the source noted.
