The President of the Senate Ahmed Lawan has made it clear that nobody should expect the Senate under his leadership to override the veto of President Buhari on the Electoral Act Amendment Bill. A credible source told YeyeNews.com that Ahmed Lawan made the comment during a closed door meeting with some high ranking senators to discuss the appropriate response to the President Buhari’s refusal to assent to the Electoral Bill.
“It was a tense meeting. But Mr. Lawan made it clear that even if 108 senators append their signature to indicate their readiness to override the president, he will never allow it to happen in the red chamber. He argued that as the father of the nation, Buhari knows what is best for the nation”, the source said.
A senator who did not want his name mentioned told YeyeNews.com that Lawan has been lobbying and putting pressure on those of his colleagues who signed to override Buhar’s veto for them to reverse their decision. “The senate president has made it clear that he will always align with the interest of President Buhari. This time will not be an exception. He’s doing everything possible to prevent senators from overriding the president”.
An aide of the senate president pointed out that Ahmed Lawan was only doing what is expected of him. “Without President Buhari’s support Ahmed Lawan would not have become the senate president. It is only fair that he supports this president to the best of his ability. He will not partake in any action that is capable of embarrassing the president. Rather than castigate him, Nigerians ought to commend Ahmed Lawan for his loyalty”, the aide told YeyeNews.com.
In another vein, a senator on the platform of the PDP condemned Ahmed Lawan, saying that politicians like Lawan are the real problem facing Nigeria because they have not the character or the will to do what is in the interest of the nation. He advised Senator Lawan’s constituents who are aggrieved by his stance against the will of the masses to start a recall campaign against the senator.
