A Nigerian senator from Yobe state has reportedly gifted his teenage bride a N50m worth mansion in Abuja just few days after donating wheelbarrows and shovels to his constituents. A source who claimed to be closed to the senator told YeyeNews.com that the keys to the mansion was presented to the teenage bride in a quiet ceremony witnessed by friends and close family members of the senator.
But one of the constituents who witnessed the donation of the wheelbarrows by the senator expressed disappointment that such a high level government official considered giving such primitive implements as empowerment to his people. The source explained that the senator organized an elaborate fanfare to ‘empower’ his constituents with wheelbarrows and shovels but chose a quiet ceremony a few days later to gift his 16 years old bride a multimillion naira mansion.
“His action is a classic example of how politicians consider the ordinary people. The people just need to exist for the sole purpose of legitimizing elections. Or how else can one explain the insulting gesture of giving them wheelbarrows when weighed against the reported N50m mansion gift to his teenage bride? He has clearly told his constituents that they don’t deserve anything more than being menial laborers all their lives”.
Meanwhile an aide of the senator has justified the actions of his boss by arguing that the constituents should consider the wheelbarrows and shovels given to them as a privilege. “The senator does not owe them any donation. They should consider themselves privileged to have received those farm tools. Has their governor ever given them even a cutlass? Let them learn to appreciate rather than questioning the value of his gift to his beautiful young wife”.
